Published in Academia: Sugar Wars: A Matter of Life & Death, by Peter Hofmann DDS.
The purpose of this article is to point out dozens of myths, scams & falsehoods that cheat people of their health and billions in savings each year and to reveal products and concepts that will improve the health of your mouth and body. Did you know that five of the major causes of death are related to problems in the mouth? A healthy mouth will protect you from heart disease, pneumonia, pancreatitis, cancers, dementia, and other diseases or disorders. There are proven interconnections between mouth disease, the microbiome of the gut, colon cancer, diabetes, to both sucrose and HFCS.
There is, however, a miracle-like sugar that is found in all our cells and in many health-promoting vegetables and fruit. It is produced in the mitochondrial of our cells and stored in the same location where the DNA is fabricated as building blocks for a healthy body. It is symmetrical in design, a 5-carbon alcohol sugar with a structure much like that of the pentose sugar, Ribose. Ribose is at the core of both DNA and RNA. So, is this miracle sugar used to repair and produce RNA? We do not know. We do know that it can prevent or stop tooth decay, strep throat, sinusitis, diabetes, and inhibit serious tissue changes including colon cancer. It is semi-absorbed into the bloodstream and can cross cell walls, its symmetry allows it to be able to fold its “arms” to carry and deposit the calcium ion onto both bone and enamel. The name of this wonder sugar is xylitol. Xylitol, unlike Stevia, will not affect the hormonal balance and will not affect your blood pressure.
The public needs to be aware that we often manufacture disease. A good example is the 500 drugs and medications that create dry mouth and promotes periodontal disease that feeds bacteria into our bloodstream. High Fructose Corn syrup, or HFCS, has been promoted because it is cheap vs. the natural sugar Xylitol which protects tissue and lowers blood sugar levels. Xylitol has a glycemic value of 7 versus sucrose or table sugar which has a glycemic index of 70. Both sucrose and HFCS cause type 2 Diabetes while xylitol helps to prevent it. HFCS causes fatty liver disease, whereas xylitol counters constipation and microbes that can cause cancer. Xylitol is a tasty food-medicine that stimulates salivary flow and the flow of fluids in the gut. It can prevent dry mouth, while also helping to prevent constipation and a leaky gut. Because it is hypertonic it stimulates the flow of all kinds of fluids in the gut, mouth, and nasal passages where it can break up phlegm. Most doctors and the mainstream media have not heard of it and that is one reason why Dr. Hofmann calls this the “Untold Story” which has been suppressed by big money and politics. It is time for a change. Over 80 years of research with a sampling of millions of people in Finland shows how effective and safe this simple sugar is. These were people of every age level, social level, and race. It is so safe that the FDA allows it to be sold as sugar-free.
The book Dentistry Xposed reveals 23 widespread myths, 100’s of amazing facts, 45 “truth-bytes” that can help you change the course of your life. For instance, alcohol in Listerine is OK but aged alcohol in bar drinks can cause oral cancer. There is an amazing super-soft toothbrush that will clean your teeth better and safer than other brushes. However, there are political, economic, and corporate powers that have prevented many of the answers from getting to the public. Research in America tends to work top-down following profit motives instead of bottom-up with the evidence-based observation of those who are sick or in need. Understanding good preventive techniques and products will save people a lot of money and lives in the long term. For instance, since both table sugar and HFCS weaken the immune response to viruses like Covid-19, it will benefit everyone if the government educates the public about xylitol and makes foods that utilize or carry it available.
Teaching the public how to communicate with health professionals and giving them the knowledge to make the right decisions about their diet will save lives, money, and pain. It will help people diagnose problems before they cause an emergency or weaken a heart, such as in the case of sleep apnea or sleeplessness in a co-worker or family member. That is why I wrote Dentistry Xposed which will also teach people how to keep an effective Dental Emergency Kit for those tooth problems that pop up when least expected. The book includes a glossary of dental terms and answers tough questions related to dental erosion, stress, vaping, Apple Cider vinegar, sleep apnea, poor-fitting crowns, dry mouth syndrome, & disease prevention.
The logic of using sugar to heal problems caused by sugar does not register easily in one’s mind. However, Dr. Hofmann learned by his mistake and now calls xylitol a “miracle molecule” and uses it on a regular basis as a mint, chewing gum, and spray. It helps to control the acidity of saliva and therefore aids in both the control of tooth decay and the formation of calculus – a key cause of periodontal disease. As stated, earlier xylitol stimulates the flow of liquids: saliva in the mouth, the dilution of phlegm or mucus in the nasal passages, and the softening of stools in the colon. It is cheaply used as a spray to stop strep throat and a nasal squirt to control sinus, nasopharyngeal, or middle ear infections. God gave us this super-natural sugar for a reason- yet manufacturers have promoted the disease-causing sugars for generations. We can prevent serious problems like diabetes, colon cancer, and other diseases with the effective use of this simple yet powerful healing molecule. It is found naturally in strawberries, mushrooms, cauliflower, and raspberries and can be bought as a mint or raw sugar at nutrition and grocery stores. The only downside is that to a new user it can cause a runny stool and is not good for dogs.
Xylitol is so safe that many countries give it to children or pregnant women to prevent tooth decay. It passes through tissue, placenta, and bone barriers to protect the body and the fetus. Research is showing that it decreases preterm birth, heals chronic wounds, and can help fight both depression and the flu. Dr. Hofmann had a persistent tendency to develop strep throat each winter. He discovered that when he mixed xylitol with saline solution and sprayed it in his throat it would heal his dry cough and prevent a persistent strep throat problem. Other doctors have used it to treat middle ear infections and nasopharyngeal or sinus infections. Xylitol is sold in nutrition-focused grocery stores, usually at a reasonable price. We are blessed to have this 5-Carbon food-medicine to counter the deadly effects of 6-carbon sugars. When bad bacteria consume this 5-carbon sugar-alcohol they cannot metabolize and become inactive. They cannot multiply nor can they stay attached to the tissue they are harming. Xylitol stimulates saliva flow or fluid flow in the area which washes away the bad bacteria and the acids they had produce. It is a one-two-three punch that stops inflammation. We should do all we can to promote and use this miracle-sugar. Even the FDA allows grocery stores to sell it as “sugar-free.” In preparing for his book not a single doctor who conversed with Dr. Hofmann knew anything about the power of Xylitol. Nurses he spoke to said they used it in the hospital for treating dry coughs. This may be explained by the fact the nurses are more involved in the day-to-day care of patients whereas doctors acting as overseers may be too distracted to learn from them. Dr. Hofmann is not surprised by this failure since he made the mistake years ago of buying some spray which he then left unused and unsold in his cabinet. No one is educating us, and this is another good reason to buy this book and share it with your dentist or physician. Dr. Hofmann states, “There is a lot of information that he collected over 44 years of practicing dentistry including a new substance that removes decay without the need for a needle or drill.”
During this trying time of severe weather, negative politics, and Covid-19 it is important to maintain a healthy diet and good rest. Fresh air, sunshine, and exercise also help the immune system. These are part of the key to preventing viruses from taking control of our bodies. It is important to keep a healthy microbiome in our gut so that the immune system is protected. Therefore, it is important to eat foods that restore and protect the microbiome such as a non-sugar yogurt (make sure there is no High Fructose Corn Syrup used to sweeten it), sauerkraut, cauliflower, fresh leafy vegetables, and other safe proteins. Taking probiotic supplements can also help. We should be aware that drugs such as Advil and Splenda can negatively affect the microbiome in the gut and thus severely affect our ability to fight disease. Splenda is a substitute sugar, and research is showing that it acts as an antibiotic in that it negatively affects the microbiome in the gut. This can in turn affect the immune response of the individual.
Xylitol is a good prebiotic or food medicine that will help the gut maintain a good microbiome. It does the same thing for the mouth and will thus protect you from tooth decay, a dry mouth, and bad breath. There are 80 years of research showing how it safeguarded the children as they grew up in the nation of Finland. This research has been ignored by our sugar producers and politicians for many reasons: 1) There is no money to be made in promoting this good “sugar-free” sugar that our own bodies store in the mitochondria to help repair the cell, 2) It is a little bit more expensive and so the government has not promoted it like it has High Fructose Corn Syrup as a natural sweetening for packaged foods, 3) We have not grown up on it like the Europeans and Asians and so our bodies are not adapted to its good taste and special qualities– therefore some people may have a mild allergy to it or if you take too much your intestine can feel bloated because it is working to change the microbiome, 4) People have been discouraged by those who have little knowledge of xylitol or who are trying to protect their own interests and 5) Some people think that because it is not healthy for a dog to eat it that it is therefore not healthy—that is far from true since dogs can die consuming polyphenols which are biochemicals that we know protect the heart.
